Mauvaises Tournures, 2022
This collaborative art project by Baptiste Laurent, Yann Leto and Léo Faber, in which six hands paint more than 17 paintings of different dimensions, is presented as a kind of artistic laboratory. There have been many such experiments in the history of art, from the 15th century to the present day.
However, the important elements are the working method and their own artistic and personal identities. The first element is defined by the rules of the game and its consequences, which are seen as a boxing match, a sword duel or a game of chess. The second element is their artistic and personal identities, defined by their tastes, styles and inner worlds.
These Frenchmen from Bordeaux, Metz and Nantes who have come to live in Spain embody the literary and cinematographic figures of the hero (Alexandre Dumas’ Les Trois Mousquetaires) and the anti-hero (Sergio Leone’s film, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly).
These imaginary representations highlight the human and ethical pretensions that define the human condition between individualism and solidarity. In the paintings, they engage in a serious, rigorous, comic and absurd conversation about painting itself and the history of contemporary art. Their paintings are part of an aesthetic of European neo-figuration, in particular German painting, agitated by pop and urban touches from the American world and French comics.
These painters gave rise to a theory of form. This exhibition deals with the figure of genius, artistic authenticity and personal ethics. These collaborative experiments give new impetus to these creators in the face of new challenges. They take with them new ways of solving, innovating and continuing to paint from the most intimate of emotions, the pleasure of painting.
“Le coup du chapeau”, text by Pablo Barrios, curator of the exhibition.
